Former Green Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Fregene Dies at 77 – Nigerian Football Mourns a Legend

Nigerian football has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Fregene, softfootball reports.

Fregene’s passing was announced by former teammate and Nigerian football icon, Segun Odegbami, who revealed that the ex-goalkeeper died in a hospital in Sapele, Delta State, after a prolonged illness.

The 77-year-old had reportedly been on life support for the past week before passing away peacefully in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children.

Confirming the sad development, Odegbami paid tribute to his former teammate and expressed gratitude to the many Nigerians who supported the football legend during his health struggles.

A few minutes ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, who has been on life support for the past one week, passed on to meet his creator,

Odegbami stated.

Fregene represented Nigeria at the 1968 Summer Olympics and was a key member of the national team during the 1960s and 1970s. His contributions to Nigerian football earned him widespread respect among teammates, fans, and future generations of players.

Softfootball notes that Fregene’s death marks the end of an era for Nigerian football.
