France manager Didier Deschamps has publicly questioned the officiating following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, raising concerns about whether the referee was fit to oversee a match of such magnitude.

Softfootball reported that Deschamps’ comments came shortly after Spain booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with an impressive victory over Les Bleus. While the France boss acknowledged the disappointment of the result, he shifted attention to the standard of officiating during the high-stakes encounter.

Speaking after the match, Deschamps said:

I will ask a question… does the referee possess the required level to manage a World Cup semi-final?

The French coach’s remarks are likely to spark debate, particularly after several contentious decisions during the match.

However, Spain produced a disciplined performance throughout, with Mikel Oyarzabal opening the scoring from the penalty spot before Pedro Porro added a second-half goal to secure La Roja’s place in the final.

France’s defeat brings an end to their World Cup campaign, while Spain now turn their focus to the final as they chase another global crown. Deschamps, meanwhile, will reflect on his side’s performance as attention shifts to the future following their semi-final exit.
