Chelsea has been in great form since the end of last season and throughout pre-season. The Blues won the UEFA Conference League when they beat Real Betis in the final in Enzo Maresca’s first season.
The Italian manager guided the Blues to finish fourth, guaranteeing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. But the biggest win came in the office season when a young Chelsea team beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Delap scored over 10 premier league goals last season but it couldn’t save Ipswich as they were relegated to the English Championship but his poacher ‘s instinct didn’t go unnoticed by Premier League big boys as Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea came calling.
Ipswich had set his release clause at £30million and it was a great fee for the former Manchester City striker. And after consultation with his representative, Delap made the choice to sign for Chelsea.
Interestingly, Delap is firmly in the thoughts of Coach Maresca as the Italian hopes to rotate him alongside fellow new signing Joao Pedro while last seasons target Nicolas Jackson is now surplus to requirement.
Jackson has been told to look for a new club and he is currently linked to the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle and some things from Saudi Arabia.
However, the Senegalese wants to stay in the Premier League even if he has accepted that he is no longer needed at Stamford Bridge following the arrivals of Pedro and Delap.
Chelsea will hope the likes of Delap deliver the goals when they face Crystal Palace in their first premier league match of the season next Sunday.
