Cristian Romero is increasingly likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with fresh details emerging about his contract situation.

Softfootball understands that Romero, who is under contract until 2029, has already attracted interest from top clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester United. Despite previously rejecting offers, the Argentine has hinted at the possibility of a summer move on March 19th 2026.

Tottenham’s inconsistent season has only fueled speculation, with the club struggling for form in the Premier League. Their recent 1–1 draw with Liverpool FC at Anfield highlighted both resilience and ongoing issues.

According to Fabrizio Romano via his official x handle, there is no formal release clause written into Romero’s contract. While there had been a gentlemen’s agreement allowing the defender to join a Spanish club if a strong offer arrived, it was never fixed at €60 million and was not officially documented.

Fabrizio confirmed:

Understand there are no written release clauses into Cuti Romero’s contract. There was a gentlemen pact with Spurs to let him go to Spanish clubs in case of good proposals, but never fixed at €60m and not in paper. …and it was with Daniel Levy, who’s no longer at the club. Romero remains likely to leave Spurs in summer, as reported in February.

The agreement was reportedly made with former Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is no longer at the club, further complicating any potential transfer scenario.

All signs now point toward a crucial summer decision for Romero and Spurs.
