AC Milan will face unexpected competition from newly promoted Como in their pursuit of Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, as the Serie A newcomers make a surprise late move for the wantaway striker.

According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Softfootball understands Como have entered the race and would have no issue meeting Rashford’s financial demands, potentially giving them an edge given United’s reluctance to cover part of his wages in a loan scenario.

The Lariani also believe their club ambassador Raphael Varane could help smooth negotiations, given his history as Rashford’s teammate at Old Trafford for three seasons before his retirement and subsequent move into a boardroom role at Como.

Rashford’s future at United has remained uncertain for weeks, with his current form and playing time both falling well short of previous seasons.

Should Como’s interest firm up into a concrete offer, it would represent one of the more unexpected transfer sagas of the January window, pitting a newly promoted club against Europe’s traditional heavyweights for one of England’s most recognisable forwards.
