England manager Thomas Tuchel has addressed the widespread shock surrounding his decision to leave Cole Palmer out of the official England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Chelsea playmaker, who wore the club’s iconic No. 10 shirt, was expected by many supporters to be a guaranteed inclusion after his breakout performances in recent years.

Tuchel, however, maintained that Palmer’s form and availability did not meet the standards required for this tournament cycle.

In his statement, Tuchel said:

Cole Palmer wasn’t as decisive as previous seasons, he wasn’t available for us a lot and wasn’t decisive.

He further explained that competition for Palmer’s preferred role was exceptionally fierce:

He also competes in the right half‑10 position, where we decided for Jude, Morgan and Ebs who are outstanding players, had better seasons and were more decisive in our camps than Cole.

According to Softfootball, Palmer was not the only high‑profile omission. Several notable names failed to make the final squad list, including:

  • Harry Maguire
  • Lewis Hall
  • Morgan Gibbs‑White
  • Adam Wharton
  • Phil Foden
  • Jarrod Bowen
  • Alex Scott
  • Trent Alexander‑Arnold
  • Luke Shaw
  • Fikayo Tomori

The exclusions have sparked intense debate among fans and pundits, with many questioning the direction and selection criteria of Tuchel’s England setup. As the World Cup approaches, the manager’s choices will remain under close scrutiny, especially if results fail to justify the bold decisions.
