Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed Victor Boniface will miss the club’s final fixture of 2024 against Freiburg despite recently returning to full training.

The Nigerian striker picked up an injury while on international duty last month and had been expected to return after resuming team training earlier this week.

However, Softfootball reports Alonso has ruled Boniface out after assessing his fitness ahead of the Bundesliga encounter.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, the Spaniard said:

Victor Boniface, Amine Adil and Jonas Hoffmann are unavailable for the game due to injuries.

Boniface has nevertheless enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring eight goals in 15 appearances across all competitions for the reigning Bundesliga champions despite being hampered by fitness problems. His absence is another setback for Leverkusen as they prepare for their final match of the year.

Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian Nathan Tella remains available for selection and is expected to play a more prominent role as Alonso’s side look to finish 2024 on a winning note.
