Bologna have reached an agreement to sign experienced Italian defender Matteo Darmian as a free agent, with the move set to strengthen their options following Emil Holm’s long-term injury.
Darmian will join Bologna on a one-year contract after leaving Inter in June as a free agent. The versatile full-back brings significant Serie A and international experience to Vincenzo Italiano’s squad and is capable of operating on either side of the defence.
The deal represents a return to Serie A competition for Darmian, who spent the past several seasons at Inter after previously representing clubs including AC Milan, Palermo, Torino and Parma in Italy. He also enjoyed a spell in the Premier League with Manchester United.
Softfootball understands that Bologna moved for Darmian after Holm suffered a long-term injury, creating a need for additional defensive cover. The 36-year-old’s experience is expected to provide another option for Italiano as Bologna continue their campaign.
The club have also completed the signing of Mikel Amondarain from Estudiantes, adding another defensive option to their squad.
Amondarain arrives from the Argentine side as Bologna continue to strengthen their squad during the current transfer window. His arrival gives the Italian club another player capable of adding depth to their defensive department.
Darmian’s arrival is particularly notable because of his wealth of experience at the highest level. He has won domestic honours with Inter and has also represented Italy on the international stage.
With Bologna dealing with Holm’s injury setback, the agreement for Darmian provides an experienced solution while the club integrate Amondarain into the squad.
The move is now expected to be formally completed, with Darmian set to begin a new chapter in his Serie A career after his departure from Inter.
