Harry Kane delivered yet again for Bayern Munich, scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Chelsea on Day 2 of the UEFA Champions League. In the game’s preview, Softfootball reported that the German giants were slight favourites to get the victory, given the home advantage, and the result keeps Bayern’s perfect start to the 2025/26 season alive and reminded Chelsea of how much work lies ahead despite their strong European return.
Chelsea, back in the UCL after two years out and fresh from lifting both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last season after thrashing PSG 3-nil in the final. Chelsea started brightly as Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto caused early problems down the right flank, but the home side gradually settled into rhythm. The breakthrough came when Michael Olise whipped in a dangerous cross that Trevoh Chalobah could only deflect into his own net.

Bayern doubled their advantage when Kane drew a penalty under pressure from Moisés Caicedo. The England captain made no mistake from the spot, firing low into the corner for his 24th successful penalty in a Bayern shirt. Chelsea responded almost immediately, though, with Palmer (who was playing his 100th game for Chelsea today), charging from midfield, linking up with Gusto, and curling a superb effort into the top corner to halve the deficit before halftime.

The Blues carried that momentum into the restart but failed to turn possession into goals. Robert Sánchez kept them in it with two excellent saves, one from Kane and another from Olise, but his resistance was finally broken when Gusto’s loose pass gifted the ball to Kane, who slotted home clinically. Chelsea thought they had pulled one back late on through Palmer, but VAR intervened, ruling him offside by the narrowest of margins.
Harry Kane was obviously the man of the match, and Bayern posted a video of the striker receiving his award on their official X account, with the admin even teasing the English international to at least act surprised.

Bayern, who had lost just once in their last 17 home matches in the competition, once again proved why the Allianz Arena is a fortress. Vincent Kompany’s men look primed for another deep run in Europe, while Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea showed flashes of promise but ultimately left Munich empty-handed.
