Joe Aribo was among the substitutes used as struggling Southampton suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Nigeria international was brought on for James Bree at the start of the second half, but couldn’t help his side avoid a result that leaves them bottom of the table.

Softfootball reports that Jhon Duran’s 24th-minute strike proved enough to secure all three points for Villa.

Southampton remain rooted to the foot of the Premier League standings, having picked up just five points from their opening 15 games of the season.

Elsewhere in the league on Saturday, Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, while Brentford produced one of the results of the weekend, thrashing Newcastle United 4-2.

Southampton will need a big response soon if they hope to climb away from the relegation zone before it’s too late.
