Manchester United’s recruitment team continue to quietly plan for the future as the club looks to refresh its midfield options over the next few transfer windows, with a strong focus on young players who can grow into long-term starters.

The Red Devils have been tracking Carlos Baleba’s development closely, impressed by his physical presence, energy, and maturity in the Premier League despite his age.

According to Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle, United’s interest remains active but patient. Romano posted:

Manchester United maintain regular contact with Carlos Baleba’s camp since last summer.
He’s one of the main targets for 2026 but no fresh bid or direct talks with Brighton took place this month. Brighton still intend to keep Baleba this season.

Softfootball understands that United were heavily interested in Baleba during the summer transfer window and even made direct contact with the midfielder’s representatives over a potential move to Old Trafford. However, Brighton remained firm throughout, making it clear they had no intention of selling one of their key assets.

Away from club matters, Baleba is currently on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he is representing Cameroon. The midfielder is set to be involved later today as Cameroon face South Africa in a high-stakes round of 16 clash, a stage where his performances could further underline why Manchester United are prepared to play the long game in their pursuit.
