Ancelotti Clarifies Neymar’s World Cup Chances After Growing Speculation

Carlo Ancelotti tried to settle the rising speculation around Neymar’s World Cup prospects during Brazil’s press conference in Washington on Friday. The questions came quickly, and after a while, the coach felt he had to address the subject directly.

He reminded reporters that Brazil’s preparations are still ongoing and pointed out that player debates are normal, especially after recent discussions around young talents like Estevao, which SoftFootball reported on earlier this season.

The coach kept his message clear, as seen in a post shared by Fabrizio Romano on his official X account.

Fabrizio Romano posted:

Ancelotti: I understand you guys are very interested in Neymar. I want to clarify.

We are in December, World Cup is in June. When I announce the squad in May, if Neymar deserves to go, if he’s well, if he’s better or same as another, he will play the World Cup, period.

He said it slowly, almost tired of repeating it, but firm. He added that he does not owe anyone anything when selecting the final group for Qatar. Performance and physical condition will decide everything.

Neymar last played for Brazil in October 2023 before the torn ACL that changed the direction of his career. He has returned to Santos and delivered exciting moments, including a hat trick in November, but Ancelotti is focused on consistency rather than flashes.

He made it clear that Brazil cannot depend on a single player anymore. The team has grown, and competition for attacking roles is high. Richarlison, Raphinha, Gabriel Martinelli, Joao Pedro, Luiz Henrique and Estevao are all being monitored closely.

Ancelotti has been working hard to create a strong collective identity. SoftFootball recently highlighted how Vinicius Junior described the coach as someone who brings confidence and calm to the squad.

That insight helps explain why Ancelotti is trying to shift the conversation away from individuals and toward the group. He wants players who aim to win the World Cup, not players who chase personal status.

Brazil’s World Cup draw placed them with Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, a group that looks manageable on paper but requires full focus. The coach said he does not want unnecessary distractions as preparations continue.

He also mentioned that results during the upcoming FIFA fixtures will guide the final decisions. The squad will be shaped step by step, not through rushed conclusions in December.

The final list of 26 players will arrive in May 2026. Until then, Neymar’s chances rest on his ability to stay fit, play regularly and avoid setbacks. Ancelotti left the door open but did not give any promises.

What matters most is what happens between now and the announcement. The message was simple. No guaranteed spots. No special treatment. Just performance.
