Sevilla 4–1 Barcelona: Sánchez Sparks Shock Win as Lewandowski’s Miss Haunts Barça

3 Min Read

Sevilla pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the LaLiga season, thrashing Barcelona 4–1 at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Despite Barcelona being favourites heading into the encounter, Softfootball expected Sevilla to try and cause an upset, and they did in spectacular fashion.

It was their first home win of the season, and it came at the expense of a Barça side that hadn’t lost away in 15 matches. Also, this was against a Barcelona team that is still reeling from the 2-1 home defeat against PSG in the Champions League.

Right from the start, the hosts looked sharper and hungrier. They pressed high, forcing mistakes in midfield. Then came the first controversial twist: Ronald Araújo was judged to have pulled Isaac Romero in the box, a call that left Barça players fuming, and former Barcelona forward Alexis Sánchez didn’t care much; he stepped up and calmly rolled it past Wojciech Szczęsny to make it one-nil after 13 minutes.

Barça didn’t quite wake up after that. Sevilla smelt blood and struck again, this time with Romero finishing off a brilliant move after catching Koundé out of position. For all their possession, Hansi Flick’s men barely looked threatening and did not reply with a goal of their own until just before half-time, when Marcus Rashford volleyed home a Pedri assist to drag them back into it.

The second half started with more intent from Barcelona. Rashford went close again, and Pedri tested Odisseas Vlachodimos twice. When Alejandro Balde went down inside the box, it felt like the comeback was on. But Robert Lewandowski, usually ice-cold from the spot, sent his penalty wide, much to the disappointment of Barcelona faithfuls worldwide.

The miss was very costly and proved to be the turning point of the encounter as Sevilla suddenly believed again. They soaked up pressure and then hit on the break José Ángel Carmona fired home a low drive in stoppage time before Akor Adams wrapped it up moments later.

Sevilla cheekily posted a subtle dig at Barcelona with a picture posted on their official X account referring to the scoreboard; they also posted a video on the team’s official X account of the players celebrating with the home fans after the victory.

It’s Sevilla’s first league win over Barça since 2015, and honestly, one they’ll remember for a while. For Barcelona, though, this defeat will sting not just because of the scoreline, but how easily they crumbled.
