Gianluigi Donnarumma has explained that his decision to join Manchester City was driven not only by the club’s determination to sign him but also by Pep Guardiola’s personal desire to bring him in. The Italian goalkeeper said he felt “immense pride and happiness” knowing that one of football’s greatest managers wanted him at the Etihad.

In a tweet posted by football expert and analyst Fabrizio Romano via his official X account, Donnarumma was quoted revealing his honest motivation for the move, and the Italian highlighted Pep’s strong influence in making the deal happen.

Fabrizio Posted:

“Honestly, I really wanted to join Man City… they wanted me, I felt their strong interest and Pep Guardiola really trusted me. Pep wanted me there and I can only feel proud about that. I’m so, so happy to join such a top club”.

The quote highlighted Donnarumma’s honest motivation behind the move. He described the feeling of being wanted by Guardiola as an indescribable emotion and a source of great pride.

Softfootball reported the news when the transfer was finalised on deadline day, ending Donnarumma’s four-year stay at Paris Saint-Germain. He was even included in Manchester City’s 23-man squad list submitted to UEFA.

During his time in France, the 25-year-old was very important in PSG’s Champions League success. However, with Luis Enrique informing him he was not part of the club’s future plans, the Italian shot-stopper opted for a fresh start in Manchester.

With Guardiola’s faith and City’s ambition, Donnarumma now embarks on a new chapter in the Premier League, eager to prove himself under one of the most successful managers in modern football.
