Rio Ferdinand advises Manchester United not to sign Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged his former club to steer clear of RB Leipzig striker, Benjamin Sesko as they continue their search for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season.

Man United have brought in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon in the summer transfer window but continue to be linked with other targets.

The lack of a genuine goalscorer is perhaps the most pressing issue that remains at United on the back of a disappointing season for both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, who managed just seven league goals between them last term.

The Red Devils are still in search of a prolific goalscorer and Sesko has been one of the names linked with the club. However, Ferdinand has a different view on United transfer strategy, claiming that the move is too risky and advises United to go for a more experienced striker than the 22-year-old.

Currently, Man United frontline consists of many young talents who are vying for a spot in the starting lineup. The former England international claimed that United needs to sign a marksman who can be a role model to the likes of Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund and Chido Obi.

In a recent episode of Rio Reacts on Rio Ferdinand’s official YouTube channel, he said:

“I think you’ve got to look at the here and now at the moment with Man United. I’m not really doubting (Sesko) as a player.

“I’m saying Man United need experience at the top of the pitch. They’ve got Hojlund, Zirkzee, Chido. Young, inexperienced players. They need someone to look at and go, ‘That’s how you play as a number nine.

“When you’re going to buy somebody who hasn’t got as much experience as I’d like, I think that’s another risk. Is it worth taking with inexperienced players at this level?”

Ferdinand went on to suggest that Aston Villa hitman Ollie Watkins, who has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, would fit the mould of a player with proven Premier League experience.

But the former defender admitted he would be equally happy to invest the money into United’s engine room.

Manchester United fans will have to wait and see if any more players arrive at Old Trafford in time for the new season. In the meantime, the Red Devils are currently in the United States and preparing for a friendly clash against West Ham on Sunday, July 27.
