Eric Djemba-Djemba’s time at Manchester United was brief and largely unsuccessful, despite being signed as a potential successor to Roy Keane.

He joined from Nantes in 2003 and played 39 games, scoring two goals, before being sold to Aston Villa in 2005. While he showed glimpses of promise, including a memorable League Cup goal against Leeds United, he struggled to maintain consistent form and was ultimately unable to establish himself as a key player.

Djemba-Djemba was born in Douala, Cameroon. He holds Cameroonian and French nationalities. He acquired French nationality by naturalization on 17 October 2001.

He was declared bankrupt following his move from Manchester United to Aston Villa in 2007.

Djemba-Djemba was married and fathered four children before being divorced. He is a Christian.

Andre Onana’s career at Manchester United, since his arrival in July 2023, has been marked by both highs and lows. He joined from Inter Milan, reuniting with Erik ten Hag, and has been a regular starter, playing a key role in their FA Cup win and achieving the Premier League’s Save of the Month award three times. However, he has also faced criticism for high-profile errors, particularly in the Champions League and Premier League, and has been the subject of strong opinions from former players.

Onana is a sweeper-keeper who has strong distribution skills. He regularly comes out of his box to help build-up play and is known for his confidence on the ball and range of passing.

In Cameroon’s opening 2022 World Cup game against Switzerland, Onana had more touches of the ball outside of the box (26) than any goalkeeper in a World Cup match since records began in 1966. He was described as resembling a “holding midfielder at times” in UEFA’s Technical Observers’ report on the 2022–23 Champions League.

In July 2023, he was described as a modern keeper with the technique of an outfield player. But in April 2025, Nemanja Matić described Onana as one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.

Manchester United will begin their campaign for the 2025/26 season with a Premier League match against Arsenal at Old Trafford.
