Tributes pour in for Diogo Jota after tragic death

The football world was thrown into mourning with the death of Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota and his brother in a car crash in the early hours of Thursday.

Softfootball has followed closely all the happenings since the news broke and the amazing tributes have been touching.

Police statement from the Spanish Guardia Civil explained: “The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

“It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. The car caught on fire and the two occupants were killed.”

Liverpool kicked off the tributes.

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

This was followed by Reds former manager, Jürgen Klopp.

He said: “This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can’t see it! I’m heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother André.

“Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much!

“All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace.”

Liverpool legends, Jamie Carragher and former Captain Steven Gerrard expressed their sadness via social media.

Jamie Carragher: “Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids.”

Steven Gerrard: “RIP Diogo. Condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time.”

Jota’s former team, for whom he scored 44 goals in 131 appearances joined in on the tribute.

“We are heartbroken,” read a Wolves statement. “Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his team-mates and cherished by everyone who worked with him.

“The memories he created will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother.”

Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) paid a tribute for Jota who made his international debut in 2019 and played his final match for Portugal against Spain in the Nations League final on 8 June. He scored 14 goals in 49 appearances.

“The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated,” read a FPF statement.

“Much more than an amazing player, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.

“We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and Andre Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily.”

Softfootball had earlier reported that Jota 28 and brother Andre, 26 did not survive the car crash. He survived by his recently married wife Rute Cardoso and three children .

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and won the Premier League title last season.
