Xavi Hernandez has unveiled his first Netherlands squad since taking charge of the national team, with the new head coach making several notable changes ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.
The former Barcelona manager has handed first senior call-ups to PSV winger Ruben van Bommel and Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël, while Kenneth Taylor and Joey Veerman are also included in the 26-man squad. Virgil van Dijk remains with the team after deciding to continue his international career.

Softfootball understands that Xavi has also made some significant omissions as he begins shaping the Netherlands squad for a new cycle. Record goalscorer Memphis Depay has been left out, while Wout Weghorst, Marten de Roon, Guus Til and injured midfielder Mats Wieffer are also missing. Depay has 55 international goals from 112 appearances.
The squad represents the beginning of Xavi’s attempt to introduce his football philosophy to Oranje. The KNVB confirmed his appointment in August following Ronald Koeman’s departure, with Xavi agreeing to a contract running through the 2030 World Cup.
Koeman stepped down after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup. The Dutch were beaten on penalties after a 2-2 draw, bringing Koeman’s second spell in charge to an end.
Xavi’s first competitive assignment will see the Netherlands face Germany, Serbia and Greece during the Nations League window. The new coach will now have the opportunity to assess his squad and establish the foundations for the next international cycle.
