Newcastle United have made big progress in talks to sign Nico González from Manchester City, with negotiations now approaching the final stages.
Softfootball understands that an agreement between Newcastle and Manchester City is almost done, while discussions with González’s representatives are continuing as the Magpies look to complete the deal early this week.
Newcastle are keen to move quickly, with the Spanish midfielder now emerging as a major target as the club continues to strengthen Matthias Jaissle’s squad.
The potential move would bring an end to González’s short spell at Manchester City after the Premier League club signed him from Porto.
Softfootball reported back in July 2025 that González had asked to leave City, with the club reportedly open to offloading the midfielder only months after paying around £50 million for his services.

At the time, intermediaries were understood to be offering González to other clubs, while the player was reportedly ready for a new challenge after making 17 appearances, including 12 starts.
The arrival of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan was also understood to have accelerated plans for González’s departure.
Now, Newcastle are closing in on a deal that could give the 23-year-old the opportunity to restart his career in the Premier League.
