Manchester United winger Antony has revealed that he was very close to signing for Liverpool before his eventual move to Old Trafford.
The Brazilian, who is currently on loan at Real Betis, admitted that the transfer nearly happened in 2022 when Liverpool were considering him as potential cover for Mohamed Salah.
Softfootball reports that Erik ten Hag ultimately convinced United to pay £82 million for his services.
Antony reflected on the alternative path, noting that while Liverpool were interested, his move to Manchester United provided him with great moments despite his subsequent struggles.
His admission highlights how different his career trajectory could have been had recruitment chiefs at Anfield pursued the deal more aggressively during that window.
He explained the situation by stating:
True… I was very close to signing for Liverpool, but you never know what would have happened. In the end, I went to Manchester and had great moments there, and that was a good choice as well.
This suggests no regrets about the decision made at the time.
The winger has recently rediscovered his form in Spain, scoring three goals in six appearances for Betis. His resurgence comes after a difficult period at United, where he managed only 12 goals in 96 games, leading to his temporary exit from the Premier League.
