Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface remained an unused substitute as Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich played out a hard-fought 0-0 draw in an entertaining Bundesliga clash, Softfootball reports.
While Boniface watched from the bench throughout the 90 minutes, fellow Nigerian international Nathan Tella featured prominently for Bayer Leverkusen and delivered one of his best performances of the season.
The winger was a constant threat to Bayern’s defence with his pace, movement and attacking intent, creating several dangerous moments that nearly earned the home side all three points.
Tella came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock on more than one occasion, only to be denied by the woodwork. His efforts highlighted Leverkusen’s determination to challenge the Bundesliga leaders, as Xabi Alonso’s side matched Bayern in intensity and created the better scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
The Nigerian attacker, making his 18th Bundesliga appearance of the campaign, has now registered one goal and two assists this season. Although he was unable to add to those numbers against Bayern, his energetic display earned praise before he was substituted in the 85th minute, with Amine Adli taking his place for the closing stages.
Boniface, meanwhile, had to settle for a place on the bench as Leverkusen’s coaching staff opted not to introduce the striker during the match. The decision meant the Super Eagles star played no part in one of the biggest fixtures of the Bundesliga season.
The stalemate leaves the Bundesliga title race finely balanced, with both clubs expected to continue battling for domestic supremacy in the remaining weeks of the campaign.
