Newcastle United secured a crucial advantage in their Carabao Cup semi-final clash after defeating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

Softfootball reported that goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon gave Eddie Howe’s side a strong lead ahead of the second leg at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle started brightly and defended Arsenal’s early pressure, with Dan Burn making an important block to deny William Saliba before Martinelli struck the post.

The visitors eventually broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Isak reacted quickly inside the box to finish after Jacob Murphy’s touch from a long free-kick.

Introducing the second-half action, Gordon doubled Newcastle’s advantage in the 51st minute after David Raya saved Isak’s initial effort, allowing the winger to convert the rebound.

Arsenal pushed forward in search of a response, but Newcastle’s defence remained solid as the Gunners struggled to find a breakthrough.

The two teams will meet again at St. James’ Park on February 5, with Arsenal needing a major comeback to reach the final.
