Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has suggested the Blues could strengthen their squad during the January transfer window following the club’s growing injury problems in defence, Softfootball reports.
Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace extended their winless run to four matches, increasing pressure on the Italian manager as the second half of the season begins.
The Blues are currently without Wesley Fofana, who could miss the remainder of the campaign, while Benoit Badiashile is also sidelined with a hamstring injury. Their absence forced Maresca to hand 18-year-old Josh Acheampong a starting role alongside Levi Colwill in central defence.
Despite praising the academy graduate for an impressive and composed display, Maresca admitted Chelsea could still explore the transfer market if their defensive injury crisis persists.
The former Leicester City boss stressed that Acheampong has the qualities to become an important player at Stamford Bridge but insisted the youngster must continue his development carefully.
Maresca added that Chelsea’s transfer plans will largely depend on the recovery timelines of their injured defenders, leaving open the possibility of new arrivals before the January window closes.
