Both Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappé are tied on eight goals, but Messi has now moved ahead in the race for the Golden Boot as he holds the advantage on assists. Mbappé has three assists, while Messi has four, and assists will be the deciding factor if they finish level on goals.

Here is Golden Boot standings:

  • 🇦🇷 Lionel Messi — 8 goals, 4 assists
  • 🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappé — 8 goals, 3 assists
  • 🇳🇴 Erling Haaland — 7 goals
  • 🏴 Jude Bellingham — 6 goals, 1 assist
  • 🏴 Harry Kane — 6 goals, 1 assist
  • 🇫🇷 Ousmane Dembélé — 5 goals, 2 assists
  • 🇪🇸 Mikel Oyarzabal — 5 goals, 1 assist

Of the seven players above, only Erling Haaland whose Norway team was dumped off the World Cup by England in a 2:1 loss in the quarter‑finals of the 2026 World Cup has no games left to play.

The other six still have one final opportunity to add to their tally, with France facing England in the third‑place play‑off on Saturday, before Spain take on Argentina in Sunday’s World Cup final.
