Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim insists his sole focus heading into Sunday’s Manchester derby is on improving his team, rather than getting caught up in the occasion itself.
The Portuguese coach will experience his first taste of derby day since taking charge at Old Trafford, having previously masterminded a memorable win over City while still in charge of Sporting Lisbon earlier in the season.
Softfootball reports that Amorim addressed his mindset ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium. He declared:
I’m really focused on the details. I just want to improve the team so I cannot live it like a normal derby, like it should be, two great teams fighting for the title. And it’s not that in this moment.”
Amorim acknowledged that both sides currently find themselves in difficult form, but stressed his priorities remain firmly fixed on the bigger picture. He insisted:
It’s just one more game with a very good opponent.
Both teams are struggling in the moment, but my goal now is to improve the team, win games and I will try to win this game.
