Southampton manager Russell Martin has revealed that Paul Onuachu remained at the club because no interested team made a serious enough offer during the summer transfer window.
Softfootball understands that the Super Eagles striker was widely expected to leave St Mary’s after attracting interest from several clubs, but a move never materialised.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, Martin admitted that both the club and the player anticipated a summer departure, especially after Onuachu spent the previous campaign on loan in Turkey.
The Southampton boss explained that while there were enquiries for the Nigerian forward, none of the interested clubs submitted an offer that matched the club’s valuation or was advanced enough to warrant serious consideration.
Martin said Onuachu found himself in an uncertain situation, believing he would secure a move before the transfer window closed.
The manager also praised the 30-year-old’s professionalism throughout the period, noting that despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, the striker remained committed and respectful.
Looking ahead, Martin expects fresh interest in Onuachu when the January transfer window opens but stressed that Southampton would be delighted to keep him if he is happy to stay.
He added that some clubs may now regret not pursuing the Nigerian more aggressively during the summer after missing the opportunity to sign him.
Onuachu has made six Premier League appearances for Southampton this season as he continues to compete for a regular starting role.
Martin believes the experienced striker still has an important part to play as Southampton aim to achieve their objectives during the campaign.
