A piece of Harry Kane’s boyhood now stands permanently in Walthamstow. A life-size statue of the England captain was unveiled on Monday near Ridgeway Rovers FC, the grassroots club where Kane first learned the game as a child.
Softfootball learnt that Waltham Forest Council funded the £7,200 project, though it sat in storage for four years before a suitable site was finally agreed.
Two young players from Ridgeway Rovers did the honors at the Peter May Sports Centre, with Kane reacting warmly to the tribute:
It’s quite humbling to see it here now knowing there’s going to be loads of kids walking past and hopefully being inspired.
The location wasn’t the council’s first choice. Chingford ward councillors Emma Best and Roy Berg had originally hoped to place the statue at Chingford Overground station, but Transport for London rejected the proposal following a risk assessment.
Walthamstow won out instead, giving the Chingford-raised striker a lasting presence close to where his career began.
