Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr believes his side deserved more than a point after their 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Thursday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, softfootball reported.
The Cheetahs produced a spirited display against the three-time African champions and looked on course for a famous victory after taking an early lead. However, their inability to convert several clear-cut chances proved costly as Nigeria fought back to salvage a draw.
Rohr’s men controlled large spells of the contest and created the better opportunities, but poor finishing allowed the Super Eagles to remain in the game before they eventually found a late equaliser.
Reflecting on the result, the former Super Eagles coach admitted the draw was a fair outcome but insisted his players deserved to walk away with all three points.
According to Rohr, Benin’s organisation and attacking intent gave them the edge for most of the match, but they failed to capitalize on the moments that mattered most.
The experienced tactician also acknowledged the quality of the Nigerian side, noting that they are never an easy team to beat. Still, he believes his team missed the chance to secure victory when they were leading 1-0.
Rohr maintained that had Benin converted one of their numerous chances before Nigeria’s equaliser, the outcome could have been very different.
Despite the disappointment, Benin still have everything to play for heading into their final qualifying fixture. The Cheetahs must now turn their attention to a decisive clash against Libya, knowing a positive result will be crucial to their hopes of booking a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
