Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has made it clear that no player is guaranteed a place in his starting line-up, insisting he is prepared to leave out anyone who fails to meet his expectations, Softfootball reports.
The Italian tactician made the statement after club-record signing Enzo Fernandez was left out of Chelsea’s Premier League starting XI in recent weeks.
Despite the midfielder’s omission, Maresca stressed that he still has complete faith in the Argentina international and that the decision was based purely on tactical considerations rather than a loss of confidence.
Maresca believes competition for places is essential and has enough quality throughout his squad to rotate players without weakening the team.
The Chelsea boss emphasised that no member of his squad is indispensable, pointing to the depth available in attack and midfield as evidence that every player must continue to earn their place.
He added that while some players may possess greater quality than others, selection will always depend on what he believes is best for the team in each game rather than on reputation or transfer value.
