Ronald Koeman has officially stepped down as Netherlands head coach following the Oranje’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Softfootball understands.
The decision comes after the Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco in the Round of 32, losing on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time in Monterrey.
Despite an impressive group-stage campaign that saw the Oranje finish top of Group F after drawing with Japan before recording convincing victories over Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1), their World Cup journey came to an abrupt end in the knockout stages.

Koeman confirmed his departure with an emotional farewell message on Instagram, writing:
I want to thank all the players with whom I have had the privilege of working. Your dedication, character, and trust motivated me every day.
The 63-year-old had returned for a second spell in charge of the Netherlands after previously managing the national team between February 2018 and August 2020, before leaving to become Barcelona manager.
