England will continue their 2026 World Cup journey on Wednesday when they face DR Congo in the last-32 stage at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with Thomas Tuchel’s side aiming to prove their title credentials against a fearless African opponent.

The Three Lions secured top spot in Group L despite failing to fully convince during the group stage. After a difficult opening period against Panama, England produced a stronger second-half display, with Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham scoring the goals that sealed a 2-0 victory and confirmed qualification as group winners.

DR Congo have already created history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time as an independent nation. The Leopards secured qualification as the best third-placed team after a dramatic comeback win over Uzbekistan and earlier holding Portugal to a a frustrating 1-1 draw at the beginning of the campaign.

Sebastien Desabre’s side have shown resilience throughout the tournament and will believe they can cause a major upset against one of the favourites. A victory would send DR Congo into a last-16 meeting with either Mexico or Ecuador.

England are dealing with concerns at right-back after injuries to Jarell Quansah and Reece James. Djed Spence is expected to start, while Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and captain Harry Kane are likely to feature.

DR Congo have no fresh injury concerns. Desabre could return to a five-man defensive system, with Steve Kapuadi pushing for a start. Yoane Wissa is expected to lead the attack after his impressive display, while Brian Cipenga could make way.
