Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland manager with immediate effect following the team’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.
The decision came after Scotland’s disappointing tournament campaign, where they recorded one win and two defeats, ending their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds for the ninth time in World Cup history.
Clarke’s departure marks the end of a seven-year spell in charge, during which he achieved significant milestones for Scottish football. He guided the national team to their first World Cup appearance since 1998 and also led them to consecutive European Championship tournaments.
Softfootball understands that despite recently signing a new four-year contract extension, Clarke decided to step away after the World Cup disappointment. In his statement, he expressed pride in his players and their efforts while acknowledging that his time leading the national team had reached its conclusion.

The Scottish manager transformed the team’s fortunes during his reign, bringing stability and renewed belief after years of struggling to qualify for major tournaments. His leadership helped Scotland return to the international stage and compete regularly among Europe’s top nations.
However, the failure to progress from the 2026 World Cup group stage ultimately brought an emotional end to his tenure. Scotland will now begin the search for a new manager as they look to build on the foundations Clarke established and continue their development ahead of future competitions.
