Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić is on the verge of becoming the oldest player to represent the Spanish giants in all competitions, surpassing club legend Ferenc Puskás.

Softfootball added that Modric, who turned 39 last month, has featured in every Real Madrid game this season across all competitions, starting five of the club’s nine La Liga matches.

The Croatian maestro already holds the record as Real Madrid’s oldest player in a La Liga match after overtaking Puskas’ previous mark during last season. He was 38 years and 238 days old when he surpassed the Hungarian icon’s league record in the clash against Cadiz.

According to 90min, Modric is now expected to eclipse Puskas’ overall appearance record when Real Madrid face Celta Vigo this weekend.

Puskas made his final appearance for Los Blancos on May 8, 1966, aged 39 years and 36 days, in a Copa del Generalisimo quarter-final against Real Betis.

If Modric features against Celta Vigo, he will be 39 years and 40 days old, making him the oldest player ever to represent the club in any competition.

Since joining Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modric has enjoyed a glittering career, winning six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga crowns, five UEFA Super Cups, four FIFA Club World Cups and the 2018 Ballon d’Or after leading Croatia to the FIFA World Cup final.
