Super Eagles interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has admitted that Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 win over Libya in Friday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier came as a huge relief to him and the players.
Softfootball understands that the Super Eagles had to dig deep at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo before finally breaking down a stubborn Libyan side that defended in numbers for most of the match.

Nigeria dominated possession from the start but found it difficult to unlock the Mediterranean Knights’ defence. Libya sat deep, packed players behind the ball, and waited for chances to counterattack.
The Super Eagles also had reasons to feel frustrated after Ademola Lookman appeared to be brought down inside the box, but the referee waved away Nigeria’s penalty appeal.
William Troost-Ekong also missed a big chance in the first half after the ball fell kindly to him near the six-yard box, while Alex Iwobi failed to trouble the Libyan goalkeeper with an effort from Lookman’s delivery.
Nigeria continued to create openings in the second half, but poor finishing and Libya’s defensive discipline kept the match goalless for a long period. Lookman headed over the bar, while Iwobi also fired high as tension grew among the home supporters.
The breakthrough eventually came three minutes before the final whistle. Moses Simon worked his way down the left channel and delivered a fine cross for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who calmly finished to give Nigeria the vital win.
The goal sparked wild celebrations inside the 60,000-capacity stadium and moved the Super Eagles closer to qualification for the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.
Speaking after the game, Eguavoen said the result was a massive relief because the three points were very important to Nigeria’s qualification hopes. He admitted that he expected the team to score more goals but praised the players for staying patient against Libya’s defensive tactics.
The victory was Eguavoen’s 15th win in 25 matches as Super Eagles coach, alongside four draws and six defeats.
