New reports have moved to clarify speculation surrounding Xabi Alonso and the departure of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea to Real Madrid.
Earlier claims suggested that Chelsea had completed the transfer without Alonso’s knowledge, with reports alleging the Spaniard had no input in the decision to sell the left-back. Real Madrid officially secured Cucurella’s signature after agreeing a deal worth €55 million plus €5 million in add-ons, with the defender signing a six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu.
However, fresh information reaching Softfootball indicates those reports were inaccurate. Sources now insist Alonso was fully aware of the negotiations and remained informed about every stage of the transfer process.

The Chelsea boss is reportedly involved in all major football decisions at the club, including player arrivals, departures, contract discussions and long-term squad planning. It is also understood that Alonso personally spoke with Cucurella before the move was completed.
The clarification reinforces Alonso’s influence ahead of his first season in charge, as Chelsea continue reshaping their squad following the departure of the Spanish international.
With Cucurella now a Real Madrid player, Chelsea are expected to continue exploring the market for reinforcements at left-back as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign gather pace.
