Uzoho Emerges as Captaincy Candidate as Super Eagles Prepare for Unity Cup Opener

Éric Chelle is set to name a new captain for Nigeria’s Unity Cup opener against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, with Wilfred Ndidi and Moses Simon yet to report to camp.

Softfootball gatherd, among the leading candidates is Francis Uzoho, one of the longest‑serving players in the squad, having made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2017.

Speaking during Nigeria’s pre‑match press conference in London, Uzoho said:

It’s an honour to have played this long for the national team and to represent my country. If the coach chooses me, it would be a great privilege to wear the captain’s armband.

Preparations continued on Sunday as 17 players took part in the Super Eagles’ training session at 5:00pm, with the team stepping up intensity ahead of Tuesday’s opener. Camp is building up smoothly as the squad works towards a strong start in London.

Players currently in camp include: Francis Uzoho, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Rafiu Durosinmi, Junior Ayobami, Al Ameen Tijani, Michael Atata, Adeoye Aderemi, Oputa Chibueze, Igboke Obinna, Ocholi Elias, Oyedokun Tosin, Philip Otele, Arthur Okonkwo, Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Nnadi Tochukwu, and Terem Moffi.
