Chelsea interim manager Callum McFarlane has described the appointment of Xabi Alonso as an exciting new chapter for the club, while also insisting the players remain fully focused on finishing the season strongly despite recent disappointment.

Speaking with excitement and admiration for Alonso’s arrival as reported by chelsea via their youtube channel, McFarlane praised Chelsea for attracting one of football’s most respected young managers despite a difficult campaign.

With optimism and confidence about the club’s future, he said:

“It’s really exciting news for everybody connected to the football club. Xabi Alonso is a fantastic coach with massive pedigree already in such a short managerial career. What he has achieved so far has been incredible and I think it says a lot about Chelsea as a football club that we can still attract somebody of that level. Even though this season has not gone the way we wanted, everybody in football still recognises Chelsea as one of the biggest clubs in the world. We have top players here, some of the best talents in world football, and although we’ve been inconsistent, there have been moments this season where you can clearly see the quality within this squad. So yes, I think it’s a really exciting appointment for the club and everybody is looking forward to working with him.”

Reflecting on his own future and temporary spell in charge, McFarlane admitted his full concentration remains on Chelsea’s final games rather than personal ambitions.

With professionalism and calm focus, he explained:

“Honestly, I haven’t really thought too much about myself right now because there’s still so much at stake for this team over the next two games. I know it sounds like a boring answer, but my focus genuinely stays on preparing for the next training session and the next match. We still have objectives to fight for, we still want to finish as high as possible and hopefully secure European football. So all my energy is going into helping the players achieve that before anything else is discussed.”

Speaking carefully about Chelsea’s injury situation, McFarlane stressed the importance of managing players correctly, especially Levi Colwill after his long recovery.

With concern and praise for the young defender, he stated:

“We have to be really careful with Levi because he’s coming back from a very serious injury. The positive thing is he’s looked excellent since returning and I think everybody can see the quality he brings to this team. Not only with his defending, but with how he carries the ball and breaks lines from the back. He’s shown incredible mental strength to recover from such a difficult injury and then perform in huge games like Anfield and an FA Cup final. He’s a massive talent, not just for Chelsea but for English football as well, so our responsibility now is to manage him properly and make sure we protect him physically.”

Discussing Chelsea’s mentality ahead of the huge London derby against Tottenham, McFarlane insisted motivation will not be a problem for his players.

With determination and intensity, he said:

“I think the players have already shown over the last couple of games that the criticism about their fight and desire maybe wasn’t fair. Against top opposition they showed heart, character and togetherness. Everybody understands what Chelsea versus Tottenham means, especially at Stamford Bridge. But beyond the rivalry, both teams have massive things to play for, so there shouldn’t be any need for extra motivation. We know we need six points from our final games if we want to give ourselves the best possible finish in the table and secure European football. The players understand the responsibility and the importance of these matches.”

Reflecting honestly on Chelsea’s inconsistency this season, McFarlane admitted the squad has shown flashes of elite quality but failed to maintain those levels consistently.

With realism and belief in the squad’s potential, he explained:

“When I look at this group, I genuinely believe the quality is there to compete with anybody in Europe. We saw that even in the FA Cup final against Manchester City. Despite all the injuries we’ve had, I thought it was a very even game and honestly one moment of quality decided it. On another day, that moment could easily have gone our way. That shows the level this squad can reach. The issue is consistency. If we had produced those levels more regularly throughout the season, we wouldn’t be where we are in the league right now. But there has also been a lot of change around the club, a lot happening in the background, and naturally those things can affect momentum and confidence. The challenge now is finding a way to produce our best football much more consistently moving forward.”

McFarlane also confirmed there is already excitement around the squad regarding Alonso’s arrival at Chelsea.

With admiration and enthusiasm, he said:

“I think everyone at the football club is excited. Xabi Alonso has had a brilliant career both as a player and now as a coach. He’s won major trophies, he commands huge respect in football and naturally players are excited to work under someone with that kind of experience and success. It feels like a really exciting direction for the club.”

Softfootball believes McFarlane’s comments reflect a coach trying to stabilise the dressing room during a difficult transition period, while also maintaining belief in the long-term potential of Chelsea’s young squad.

The outlet also believes Xabi Alonso’s expected arrival has already injected excitement and optimism around Stamford Bridge, with many viewing him as the ideal figure to rebuild consistency and restore Chelsea’s competitiveness at the highest level.
