Softfootball can confirm Frank Onyeka has secured promotion to the Premier League with Coventry City, ending the club’s 25-year absence from England’s top flight after a dramatic 1–1 draw against Blackburn Rovers.
This milestone comes during a strong period for Nigerian football, with Ademola Lookman recently climbing to third on Nigeria’s all-time UEFA Champions League scorers list after netting his eighth goal in the competition.
Coventry needed just one point at Ewood Park to confirm promotion and achieved it late on, with Bobby Thomas scoring an 84th-minute equaliser to seal a top-two finish on 86 points with three games remaining.

Onyeka featured for 62 minutes, delivering a disciplined midfield performance completing 26 of 32 passes (81% accuracy) while adding two tackles, two clearances, and six recoveries before being replaced by Victor Torp.
The achievement was also celebrated by the Super Eagles , who congratulated the midfielder via their official X handle.
They posted:
Congratulations to Coventry City and Frank Onyeka on securing promotion to the Premier League! Well deserved 👊🏾

Onyeka, who turned 28 on January 1, 2026, remains a key figure for both club and country, currently contracted to Brentford FC while continuing to play an important role at international level.
