Softfootball understands that Inter Miami will not appoint a new head coach in the short term. As reported by Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle, the club has chosen to give sporting director Guillermo Hoyos the opportunity to lead the team over the coming months.

Romano shared:

Inter Miami do not plan to appoint a new head coach in the short term. Guillermo Hoyos will be in charge of leading the team and will have the opportunity to prove himself over the coming months before the club makes a final decision.

The decision follows the sudden resignation of Javier Mascherano, who stepped down with immediate effect on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Mascherano reportedly informed club officials of his departure for personal reasons, just four months after guiding Inter Miami to their first-ever MLS Cup title.

Hoyos has a long-standing connection with Lionel Messi, having coached him more than 20 years ago in the youth system of FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. That relationship could prove valuable as Inter Miami look for stability during an uncertain period.

Mascherano’s exit came after growing frustration around recent performances, particularly the club’s elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Inter Miami were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Nashville SC, with critics questioning some of the manager’s tactical decisions.

Rather than rushing into another external appointment, the club has chosen continuity and internal evaluation. Hoyos will now have the chance to prove himself and potentially position himself for the role on a longer-term basis.

The move also marks Inter Miami’s fifth coaching change in six years, underlining the instability that has surrounded the bench since the club’s launch. Club executives now appear focused on a calmer transition instead of another rapid managerial search.

With Messi still central to the project, Hoyos’ leadership period could shape the next phase of Inter Miami’s direction.
