Marc Guehi reflected on England’s recent performances as the team continues preparations under Thomas Tuchel ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Speaking to Sky Sport as posted via their x handle, Guehi addressed what didn’t quite click in England’s 1-0 loss to Japan at Wembley.
“It’s a goal,” he said with a laugh, adding,
Of course, a lot of changes in the team. But I thought people done well. It’s difficult, that’s why we have these tests against teams like Japan. It’s a shame ’cause I thought we actually created quite a few chances and could’ve done a bit better, especially in the final third. I think we can all take responsibility for that. But like I said, it’s important that we take the positives and put things into perspective. We’ve had a good campaign across the whole calendar year, so it’s important that we learn from these moments, and we’re ready come June.
On concerns about England’s record against top nations, Guehi admitted,
Yeah, I won’t sugarcoat it. It’s obviously disappointing. We want to be winning those games. But the most important is going to the World Cup and being ready for that. I think we’ve shown that in previous years where maybe the last few games before the tournament haven’t been the best, but we’ve gone there and shown what we’re able to do. It’s important that we stay calm, have each other’s backs, and stick together in these moments.
Guehi also addressed Phil Foden’s confidence struggles:
Phil’s a fantastic player. It’s obviously not been easy for him, but we’re all behind him. We’re giving him our love, and we all know how much we want him to do well, especially for his country and club. As long as we stick together and have his back, we’ll see the best of Phil very soon.

Fans also reacted strongly to England’s international fixtures, calling the 1-1 draw with Uruguay “Boring 90 minutes of my life.” However, England bounced back confidently as Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze struck to eliminate Serbia in a commanding 2-0 victory at Wembley.

Softfootball reported on these developments, highlighting both the lessons from the Japan loss and the momentum from the Serbia win as England build toward the World Cup.
