Manchester United Academy Director Stephen Torpey has highlighted the importance of giving young players the opportunity to experience playing at Old Trafford ahead of their FA Youth Cup clash with Sunderland.

Speaking in an interview with MUTV via their YouTube channel, he explained how moments like these play a crucial role in shaping the development of the club’s U18 talents.

Torpey emphasized that stepping onto such a historic pitch is more than just a game for the youngsters, describing it as a key part of their growth process.

He pointed out that the atmosphere, pressure, and environment help prepare them for senior football, while also reminding fans that patience is needed when developing young players.

“It’s a realistic environment for them   the size of the pitch, the nerves before the game, having fans there it’s all part of the development cycle. But we also have to remember we’re working with children, so there has to be a balance and a logical approach to their development.”

He also stressed the club’s responsibility to respect the competition and maintain high standards, regardless of the age of the squad.

“You don’t have to be the oldest team in the competition to compete.”

While the academy looks to the future, the senior team under Michael Carrick has experienced mixed results in recent matches.

United secured an important 3–1 victory over Aston Villa, strengthening their position in the Premier League top three and boosting their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

However, that momentum was disrupted by a 2–1 defeat to Newcastle United, despite the opposition being reduced to ten men. The result highlighted the challenges still facing the team as they push toward the end of the season.

Softfootball reported that there is a growing connection between the academy’s development structure and Carrick’s first-team philosophy, creating a more unified identity at the club.

However, the report also cautions that the pressure of performing on big stages must be carefully managed to ensure young players continue to develop without burnout as they transition into senior football.
