The ongoing goalkeeping debate at Chelsea between Filip Jørgensen and Robert Sánchez has become one of the most discussed issues surrounding the club during the 2025/26 season.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has previously admitted that the team currently does not have a clear number one goalkeeper, a situation that reflects the inconsistency seen in the position throughout the campaign.
Softfootball gathered, Both goalkeepers have had opportunities to start matches this season, but errors from each have contributed to concerns about stability in the Chelsea goal.

On some occasions Sánchez has started and made mistakes, while in other matches Jørgensen has been selected and struggled as well. This constant rotation has created uncertainty in a position where consistency is usually crucial for defensive organization.
Another major issue is the type of defenders Chelsea currently rely on. The squad includes players such as:
- Marc Cucurella
- Tosin Adarabioyo
- Benoît Badiashile
- Levi Colwill
- Wesley Fofana
- Trevoh Chalobah
- Reece James
- Malo Gusto
While these players provide defensive options, they are not always natural ball-playing defenders, which makes building from the back more difficult when opponents apply intense pressure.
Chelsea’s attempts to play out from the back have sometimes exposed the team, particularly against high-pressing opponents.

Teams such as Paris Saint‑Germain, Manchester United, and Arsenal often apply aggressive pressing systems. When Chelsea try to build from deep against such teams, mistakes can occur due to the pressure placed on defenders and goalkeepers.
The midfield structure also plays a role. Players like Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández usually operate higher up the pitch, meaning the defence sometimes lacks a deep-lying midfielder constantly dropping to receive the ball a role once performed by players such as John Obi Mikel, Jorginho or Sergio Busquets.

For example, Jørgensen could be used against teams that do not press aggressively. In Chelsea’s 4–1 victory over Aston Villa, Villa did not apply heavy pressing, which allowed the team to play more comfortably from the back.
However, against teams that press intensely, Sánchez may be the preferred option due to his stronger shot-stopping ability.
The situation presents a difficult decision for Rosenior. Chelsea may need to balance their tactical approach with the strengths of their goalkeepers, especially since the current defensive setup is not ideally suited to constant build-up play under pressure.
Finding the right balance between goalkeeper selection and tactical strategy could be crucial for Chelsea’s stability during the remainder of the season.
