Wojciech Szczesny signs Barcelona extension until 2027

Wojciech Szczesny has signed a new two-year contract with Barcelona, keeping him at the club until June 2027, Softfootball understands. His performances have convinced the club to retain him as their first-choice goalkeeper moving forward.

The Athletic reported that the 35-year-old, who initially joined Barça as a free agent in October 2024, two months after announcing his retirement from professional football following the expiration of his contract at Juventus, has chosen to extend his stay at Camp Nou from next season.

The move came as a short-term solution following Marc-André ter Stegen’s season-ending knee injury, but Szczesny has since established himself as first-choice under Hansi Flick.

Barcelona offered Szczesny a two-year extension, despite active interest in Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, who they have now signed. The 24-year-old arrived after the Catalan club triggered his €25 million release clause following a strong individual campaign with Espanyol, who finished 14th in La Liga.

While Garcia is seen as one for the long term, Szczesny’s renewal ensures continuity and experience in goal as Barcelona navigates a complex summer of financial and squad restructuring. The future of club captain Ter Stegen, who missed the entirety of the 2024-25 season with a ruptured patellar tendon, remains uncertain. Barcelona would be open to his departure as they look to ease salary constraints imposed by La Liga.

Szczesny displaced Iñaki Peña, initially Ter Stegen’s replacement, in the second half of the campaign, starting 30 games in 2025 across La Liga and the Champions League. Peña, a product of La Masia, made 23 appearances across all competitions before the winter break.

Internationally, Szczesny was capped 84 times by Poland, appearing in seven major tournaments, including Euro 2024, where he played two of his country’s three matches.

As the transfer season gets thicker, Softfootball earlier reported that Liverpool’s talisman Luis Diaz is eyeing a Barcelona move ahead of the new season.

FC Barcelona’s long-standing target, Luis Díaz, has once again expressed a strong desire to join the Blaugrana, with the Catalan giants now reevaluating their options after their move for Nico Williams fell apart spectacularly.

Inside sources say that the Colombian winger’s camp quietly kept the Barcelona dream alive, despite the club publicly prioritising Williams over Díaz.
