Manchester United coach Rúben Amorim has addressed the departure of goalkeeper André Onana, explaining the reasoning behind the decision to allow the Cameroon international to leave on loan, saying that it was for a much-needed change required at the club, Softfootball reports.
Onana, who made 102 appearances for United since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, sealed a season-long loan switch to Trabzonspor ahead of the Turkish transfer window deadline this week. While his exit came as a surprise to some, who thought that Onana, a choice player of Erik Ten Hag and now Amorim, could be shipped out of the club. But the Manchester United gaffer, Amorim, has clarified the circumstances for Onana’s departure this evening.

Even if he wasn’t shipped off, Onana has been a subject of constant headaches for either Manchester United fans or the technical crew. And this was due to his incessant goal gaffes made by the Cameroonian since he joined the club from his heroic campaign at Inter, which earned him a Champions League best goalkeeper award.
Meanwhile, as reported by Fabrizio Romano on his official X handle, he revealed the angle of the Manchester United technical crew headed by Ruben Amorim, who said the departure of Onana was part of the restructuring undergoing at the club.
Fabrizio wrote:
Onana did great at Inter but as a club now we needed a change”. “Sometimes it’s hard to point why, the performance, the moment, the bad luck in some moments was hard on him.
While Onana is the latest United player to have left Amorim’s squad, the Portuguese had earlier shipped off players like Marcus Rashford before the 2024/2025 season ended, which led the England striker to finish last season at Villa Park with Aston Villa and presently with Barcelona on loan. Also, Alejandro Garnacho made a permanent deal with Chelsea while Anthony returned to Real Betis. However, Onana’s departure isn’t permanent based on the contract details, which is a season loan, but it seemingly looks like a deal of no return with the presence of Senne Lammens, who just joined last week from Royal Antwerp for a €21m fee.
