FC Bayern have reached verbal agreement on structure, length of new deal and salary with Dayot Upamecano. The final key point discussed is a future release clause and when to make it available for other clubs.

While nothing is officially signed just yet, all the heavy lifting has more or less been done, and the French centre-back is now expected to stay in Munich.

Upamecano’s existing deal was due to run out at the end of the 2025/26 season, so this renewal arrives at a key moment. Bayern were keen to avoid dragging the situation into next year, especially with Europe’s biggest clubs keeping a close eye.

At 27, Upamecano is entering what many see as the peak years of his career, and Bayern clearly don’t want to gamble with that.

The new contract is believed to be worth up to €20 million per year, placing Upamecano, who recently addressed talk around his future, among Bayern’s top earners. There’s also a signing-on bonus in the same region, which says a lot about how highly the club values him.

Since joining from RB Leipzig in 2021, his Bayern career hasn’t been flawless, but he has matured a lot, becoming stronger mentally, calmer on the ball, and more reliable in big games.

The only real sticking point during talks was the release clause. Bayern initially wanted it delayed until 2028, but Upamecano’s representatives pushed hard for earlier flexibility. In the end, compromise won.

Bayern have reportedly agreed to include a €65 million release clause active from summer 2027, the first season of the new contract.

Upannicano has been linked with clubs like Real Madrid, PSG, and Liverpool, who were also reportedly ready to move if talks collapsed. By agreeing to the clause, Bayern keep control, secure another season at least, and still protect themselves financially.

For Bayern, this is simply good planning. The club moved early, avoided unnecessary pressure, and resolved the situation before it became a problem. It’s a clear example of calm, effective decision-making that often brings the best results.
