England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his tactical decisions following the Three Lions’ World Cup semi-final exit, while also explaining why Cole Palmer’s repeated injury absences have affected his chances with the national team.
Tuchel was speaking after Palmer withdrew from England’s latest squad because of an injury, with the Chelsea star having missed several international camps under the German coach.
“Cole Palmer misses too many opportunities, and he misses way too many camps with injuries. It’s not his fault,”
Tuchel said.
The England manager explained that players need regular involvement in national team camps to fully understand and execute his tactical demands.
I can only judge what I witness in my team. For that you have to be in camp. If you are not in camp there is a next level you cannot achieve unless you do it in my team,
he added.
Palmer was left out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad after a series of injury problems limited his involvement under Tuchel. He had featured for only 65 minutes under the manager before the tournament and missed three of the four camps Tuchel had overseen.
Tuchel’s comments also come after continued scrutiny of his tactics during England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
England had taken the lead before Tuchel changed the structure of his team and introduced more defensive players. Argentina eventually turned the game around, leading to renewed criticism of the manager’s approach.
However, Tuchel has insisted that he does not regret his tactical decisions and argued that England became too passive after taking the lead.
He explained that the change was intended to help England deal with Argentina’s threat rather than simply sit back and defend.
“We just get too passive within our structure,” Tuchel said after the defeat, insisting that the tactical switch itself was not designed to make England passive.
The manager has continued to defend his overall approach while acknowledging that England must improve their ability to control matches with possession.
With Palmer now back in Tuchel’s plans when fit, the Chelsea forward’s continued fitness problems remain an issue for the England manager as he prepares the team for the next phase of international competition.
Palmer had made a strong start to the new season before his latest withdrawal, recording four goals and two assists in seven matches for Chelsea.
