Tottenham Boss Frank Defends Romero After Controversial Instagram Message

Softfootball understands that Tottenham Hotspur head coach Thomas Frank has addressed Cristian Romero’s now-edited Instagram post, which appeared to take aim at the club’s hierarchy after Spurs’ 3–2 defeat to Bournemouth, following a recent 3–0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Speaking at a press conference, as reported by Fabrizio Romania via his official X account, Frank admitted the post was a mistake but was careful to defend his captain’s character and leadership.

He said:

Thomas Frank: After Cuti Romero became club captain, he’s done a lot of things right. Then when you’re a young leader, sometimes you make a mistake. It’s of course good to keep it internally. We had a good conversation with him this morning about everything.

Romero, who was recently appointed club captain, initially shared a message suggesting that some people only show up when things are going well to tell a few lies.

The phrase was later removed, but not before it sparked debate among supporters and media. Frank described the situation as a learning moment for a young leader, stressing that internal frustrations are best handled privately.

He confirmed that he and technical director Johan Lange held a private meeting with Romero on the morning of January 8, adding that the details of the discussion would stay behind closed doors.

Despite the public nature of the post, Frank played down any suggestion of a rift at the club. He insisted Tottenham remain aligned from ownership level down to the dressing room and dismissed fears that the episode could scare off potential January signings.

With Spurs currently 14th in the Premier League after 21 games, pressure is beginning to mount. Still, Frank remained defiant, arguing the team deserved more points from recent defeats and backing himself to handle the scrutiny. He described the situation as a perfect storm, adding that the club must come out stronger, not defensive.
