Softfootball can confirm Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with West Ham United to sign Mateus Fernandes in a blockbuster £85 million deal.

The Portuguese midfielder has been granted permission to undergo his medical ahead of completing the move, with Spurs set to break their all-time transfer record. The £85m fee comfortably surpasses the previous club-record £65m paid for Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth in August 2024.

Manchester United also pushed hard to sign the 21-year-old, but ultimately decided against matching Tottenham’s valuation. United were determined to only pursue players at the right price and those fully committed to joining the club, with Fernandes’ preference remaining unclear throughout negotiations.

Once completed, the transfer will represent another major statement of intent from Tottenham as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Despite the team’s struggles, his individual performances stood out, making him one of the most sought‑after midfielders on the market.
