Sky Sports posted a revealing clip on their X handle showing what new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi expects from his goalkeepers, and it already gives fans an idea of the kind of football Spurs may be heading into during these crucial final weeks of the season.
With Tottenham fighting to avoid relegation and only seven Premier League games left, every tactical detail suddenly feels more important.
Speaking in the video, goalkeeping coach Jack Stern, who previously worked with De Zerbi at Brighton, explained just how demanding the Italian is with his keepers. According to Stern, De Zerbi does not only care about the traditional role of a goalkeeper. He wants much more than shot-stopping. Stern said:
“He wants all of the things that any coach wants from a goalkeeper in terms of keeping the ball out of the net and doing all those normal goalkeeping things. But then on top of that, he wants the goalkeeper to be so involved in the build-up to understand. I think the biggest thing is understanding tactically how the team play. The goalkeeper is very responsible for that.”
That alone tells you the direction De Zerbi wants to take Spurs. This is not just about survival by any means necessary. It is also about trying to establish a style, even in chaos. Stern went further, adding:
“So there’s a lot of focus on that in training. He works hard with the goalkeepers. He’s very involved in terms of what the goalkeepers do in training. And again, you see the level that the goalkeepers get to when they work with him. It’s a new level.”
Still, Stern was realistic enough to admit that fans should not expect miracles overnight. He said:
“I don’t think he’ll be able to fully implement all of his ideas straight away. But I think the big thing that he’ll have, the big effect that he’ll have on the players is his belief… he’s so infectious with that belief that it’s gonna rub off onto the staff there, the players there, the goalkeepers.”

That belief may be badly needed at Spurs right now. Tottenham were recently held to a 1–1 draw by Liverpool at Anfield, a result that showed some fight, but it was followed by another damaging setback as Tottenham’s relegation fears deepened after a shock home defeat to Crystal Palace. Softfootball reported that the pressure around the club has only intensified, with every point now carrying massive importance.

For Spurs fans, this is the hope: that De Zerbi may not fix everything immediately, but his energy, tactical demands, and confidence could still be enough to drag the club away from disaster before it is too late.
