Softfootball understands that Marc-André ter Stegen’s season has taken another cruel turn. The German goalkeeper is scheduled to undergo surgery this Friday on his left hamstring after suffering the injury during Girona FC’s clash with Real Oviedo.

Girona confirmed the decision today via their official X account, finally putting an end to days of quiet concern around the squad. The surgery is now unavoidable.

MEDICAL UPDATE: Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo surgery this Friday for the injury he suffered to the hamstring of his left leg during the match against Real Oviedo. The recovery time will be determined after the procedure.

How long he’ll be out remains uncertain, though early estimates suggest a recovery of at least two to three months. For a player who only just returned from a seven-month back surgery last summer.

Ter Stegen recently underwent a medical test with Girona after Barcelona approved his loan request. He joined the team specifically to rebuild his sharpness and rhythm, to play regular football again.

The timing also raises serious questions about his international future. Now his participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup looks shaky, maybe even unlikely if rehab drags longer than expected. Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann is already being mentioned as a possible replacement.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann admitted the setback was tough to swallow, saying the keeper was on a really good path before everything halted.

For Girona, losing a keeper of his experience is a massive blow to their LaLiga campaign. Stability at the back matters, and Ter Stegen brought that calm presence.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are left in a tricky spot. The loan was meant to boost his value and attract buyers, but another lengthy absence could complicate those plans. Sometimes football just doesn’t give you a break, and right now, Ter Stegen can’t seem to catch one.
